Your Campus, Our Clinic

Occupational health is an advisory service that provides universities with advice and support to help ensure a student is best placed to thrive on the course, ultimately graduate, and work in their chosen profession/field.

HE occupational health student services consist of three main areas:

  • Fitness to Train Clearance
  • Immunity Clearance
  • Referral Service

LATUS uses registered nurses and trained phlebotomists who will adhere to relevant guidance, including that of Higher Education Occupational Physicians/Practitioners (HEOPS), the Green Book, and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Fitness to Train: Clinical and Educational Courses

Fitness to Train (FTT) is the health clearance service required by universities as part of the enrolment process. The FTT service is an electronic paperless service. Students can download the OH Clearance App to access the Health Questionnaire, or a link to the questionnaire will be sent to them.

The questionnaire questions are based on the HEOPS fitness standards guidance for the profession of study. If health declaration(s) are made within the FTT questionnaire, an occupational health follow-up will be required, usually via a telephone consultation with an experienced occupational health nurse or physician.

A certificate will be issued, along with an accompanying report, if necessary, to provide advice, recommendations, or possible adjustments for consideration, as advised by the clinician and in line with guidance.

Vaccination and Immunity Appointments

Students are required to protect service users, colleagues, and themselves by being immunised against serious communicable diseases when vaccines are available.

  • Occupational health follows the HEOPS guidance by course on testing for immunity and infection.
  • Occupational health will liaise with the university to schedule the vaccination visits; appointments are arranged on campus.
  • Students must achieve a minimum clearance status before being cleared to attend placement settings.
  • Clearance status can be tracked for the student via their app. University colleagues can track status for individuals, course groups, or entire cohorts via the ‘Real Time’ updates.

Referral Service

HE occupational health services also include on-course referrals for students who may have had a change in medical condition or a new diagnosis. Tutors or course leads can complete online referrals that link directly to the OH system. The system shows ‘Real Time’ tracking updates that clearly show appointment details and status updates. All reports are completed and sent within 24 hours of the consultation (subject to student consent).

Vaccines

Vaccines are given to provide immunity and to protect you and others whilst you are on placement/training. Vaccination dates are scheduled into your timetable. You must attend these scheduled vaccination sessions to be cleared for placement. Failure to do so is likely to result in a delay in the commencement of your placement.

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Hepatitis B is transmitted through blood and bodily fluids.

A course of Hepatitis B consists of three vaccines given over 6 months, with the following intervals: 0 (first attendance), 1 month, and 6 months.

Sometimes an accelerated course is given, consisting of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd vaccinations, each 1 month apart, followed by a booster at 12 months. Both courses are followed by a blood test conducted 4 weeks after completion. This blood test checks whether you have developed sufficient antibodies to the vaccine. Occasionally, additional doses of the vaccine may be required.

Varicella

This vaccine protects against varicella (also known as chickenpox). An initial immunity check is conducted via a blood test unless you have confirmed evidence of your disease history. If you are not immune, you will be required to have the varicella vaccination.

A course of 2 vaccinations will be given four weeks apart. It is essential to complete the course for full protection.

Tuberculosis (BCG)

This vaccine protects against tuberculosis (TB) and is for students who have not previously vaccinated.

Measles & Rubella

It is a requirement for all clinical courses that students have immunity to measles and rubella. You will therefore need to provide evidence of this to the Occupational Health Department as one of the following: disease history, blood test results showing positive immunity, or 2 MMR vaccines (or equivalent individual vaccines).
